The Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) asked the Mexican government on Monday to cover part of the increase in the minimum wage intended for 2021, which the Executive itself placed at 15%. “It is time for the government to assume its role as the main economic agent and demonstrate its commitment to the most vulnerable workers,” the confederation said in a statement.
If the Executive does not contribute a part of the payroll, Coparmex will was in favor of raising the minimum wage by about 10%, that is, 135.83 pesos.
To assume the objective of a 15% increase, Coparmex demanded that the government pay 6.42 pesos a day for each worker who receives the minimum wage in 2021. Thus, employers would assume an increase of 4% corresponding to expected inflation and 7.39 extra pesos per day, so that the worker receives a total of 142.25 pesos per day. If the Executive did not contribute a part of the payroll, Coparmex was in favor of raising the minimum wage by about 10% compared to the current one, that is, 135.83 pesos a day.
In 2020, the minimum wage increased by 20% and stood at 123.22 pesos per day. The employer’s association stressed to strengthen its position that the economy is experiencing ‘what could be the worst crisis of the last century’ due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has had ‘a very serious impact on the productive sector’ and ‘ It forces us to make a critical reflection on the way forward in the short term.
Coparmex’s claim came after the words of the president of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who last week revealed that his intention is a 15% increase in the minimum wage. ‘Our proposal for the salary increase for next year, although it is tripartite and will be resolved by the National Minimum Wages Commission (Conasami), is a 15% increase.
