CONASAMI approves a 15% increase to the minimum wage in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Dec 16 – Mexico’s National Minimum Wage Commission (CONASAMI) on Wednesday approved a 15% rise in the daily minimum wage for workers by 2021, the government said in a statement.

With the vote against the representatives of business organizations, CONASAMI decreed a global increase equivalent to 15% applicable to the different areas of the country.

This amount considers an annual increase of 6%, that is, above inflation; however, to that figure an Independent Recovery Amount, the so-called MIR, of 10.46 pesos.

The daily minimum salary is set to be increased to 141.70 pesos ($7.15) from 123.22 pesos currently, while in the special economic areas near the border with the United States the minimum salaries will rise from 185.56 pesos to 213.39 pesos per day. ($1 USD = 19.8320 Mexican pesos).

With this increase, Mexico climbs eight positions at international level in terms of the minimum wage, placing in the 76th position out of 135 countries. The aspiration in this administration is to reach a position among the first 60 countries with the highest wage perceptions.

Two professions are also included in the list of minimum professional wages. Domestic workers, who have an increase of 25% from the current minimum wage, reaching 154.03 pesos; and agricultural day laborers, who receive a 30% increase from the current minimum wage, reaching 160.19 pesos.
